Choosing a Band Instrument for Private Elementary and Junior High School Students
Parents and students who are considering an instrumental music education have the choice of many instruments. These are the primary
instruments for Future Musicians bands. Please talk with your Future Musicians instructor before choosing an instrument.
The flute is one of the higher pitched instruments of the woodwind family. It has a beautiful sound that can be light and happy or quiet and calm.
The clarinet is a popular woodwind instrument. It can play both high and low notes and plays a wide range of music from classical to
jazz. A band generally has more clarinets than any other instrument.
The saxophone can sound mellow or strong. It does everything from pop to
big band to jazz but also has its place in classical music.
The trumpet plays high brassy notes. An optional mute can make the trumpet sound entirely different. Many
great jazz artists have been trumpet players.
The trombone has the greatest note range of all the brass instruments because of its slide. The "bone" is an essential part of any
big band group.
Percussionists don't just play the drums. There are many kinds of percussion instruments including cymbals, snare drums, triangles,
bass drum. You will learn to play them all!
